Untervaz
Untervaz is located at the foot of the Calanda in the Grisons Rhine Valley. The community is home to three castle ruins, including Neuburg and Rappenstein. The remains of Friewis Castle bear witness to a historical bathing culture.
The residential municipality of Untervaz lies on the left side of the Grisons Rhine Valley and nestles harmoniously at the foot of the Calanda in the corner of the Val Cosenz. The Haldenstein Calanda (2806 m above sea level) is the highest point in the municipality. Three castle ruins belong to Untervaz, all of which were left to decay by their last owners: 2 km south-east of the village, the Neuburg ruins lie on a rocky outcrop above the Rhine. To the west of the village, in a narrow and damp crevice in the Valcosenz, lie the ruins of Rappenstein Castle from the 13th century. Only the remains of the third castle, Friewis, and the baths operated there can be seen today. The water from two springs had healing properties.
